Nationally the professional liability companies have long recognized that the chaotic, confused and inefficient nature
of an overcrowded ED has contributed to adverse outcomes, worsening quality of care, safety and increasing numbers of
successful lawsuits against hospitals and ED physicians.
In an attempt to prevent loss (payments) some professional liability companies have taken an innovative approach to
implement "programmatic" initiatives to mitigate the impact of EDO and reduce the risk of untoward events. In some
cases the carrier is willing to provide the hospitals and ED groups discounts on their premiums for the successful
implementation of such programs.
