Electronic Decision Support Tools

The development of electronic decision support tools is a new service line for Emergenuity. Recently we have seen the opportunity to supplement the functionality of ED electronic clinical records. Obviously no electronic record can do all things for all EDs and we have seen a growing opportunity to build smaller, but very specific applications that address very specific and custom needs.

The ED Case Management Tool (CMT) is just such a tool. It was developed to select the appropriate level of inpatient care to assure that the high end and scarce resources (telemetry and unit beds) are used judiciously so that these beds are available for the patients that really need them. The tool prints a report in the ED that assigns the appropriate level of care and the clinical criteria associated with the selection. This decreases holding patients for admission and denials for inappropriate admissions and short stays.

The report is shared with the ED physician to "sell" that level of care to the admitting physician. This counter-acts the admitting physician's tendency to utilize higher level resources. This conserves them for the patients that are being held for admission in the ED. The reallocation of resources significantly decreases the impact of EDO.
