Traditional Bi-Modal

Bi-Modal Volume Variation and ED Design:
Major Causes of ED Crowding

Patients by Hour of Day

Bi-Modal: Two EDs in One

For 12 hours of the day, a typical ED serving 50K patients is actually running at 74K and for 12 hours of the day it is only running at 26K.

So why do we build EDs as if they are a 50K volume ED?

Every ED designed this way will fail for 12 hours every day.

Traditional Capacity Model to Accommodate Peak

The Cost of Building an ED of Appropriate Size

Accommodating the peak volume of a typical 50K ED would require a 50% increase in the number of beds.

EDs have been systematically designed under-capacity:

  • Lack of information
  • Excessive cost at $1-1.5M per bed
  • Lack of real estate
